A Happy New Year to all! In a break from tradition our first meeting of 2019 was held on the third Tuesday of the month due to bank holiday and other regular room bookings. As is our custom, the first part of the evening was given to the Society’s AGM with our visiting speaker, Laurence Fisher giving a fantastic talk on his passion of Repairing and Renovating Automata.
Following the usual format, members heard that the Society made a small surplus during the preceding year having enjoyed an extensive program of speakers and an extremely competitively priced meal at the annual social Christmas Event. The programme for the current year will be posted on the website shortly and will include BBC favourites Eric Knowles and Thomas Forrester together with a host of other interesting speakers who will cover a wide range of topics. Please remember the Society is always pleased to welcome new members and guests. Sadly, this meeting was to be the last at which John Burleigh was to officiate as Chairman as he is standing down after many years of stalwart service. John and his wife Jill were presented with a token of appreciation by Philip Plant on behalf of the Committee and Members. The remainder of the evening was taken up with Laurence giving a most entertaining and interesting talk illustrated not only with slides and video but also using his digital microscope on the complexities of renovating and repairing a range of Automata from the smallest of bird boxes to the Vichy style acrobat automaton. The evening concluded when Laurence invited two of our members to attempt the extremely tricky process of Gold Leafing which they achieved with varying degrees of success. Thank you for a great evening Laurence! You can see more of Laurence’s work on his website at www.lfisherconsultancy.co.uk
